The Kingdom of Kurunegala located in the north western province of Kurunegala district is considered to be one of a major city in Srilanka. The Kurunegala Kingdom has played one of a main capital role in the history of Srilanka for more than 50 years since 13 century to the beginning of the 14 century. Located in an altitude of around 116 meters above the sea level linking around with several main roads in Srilanka. The Kingdom of Kurunegala is one of stunning place with a set of marvelous events that has been taken place. According to the ancient legends it is mentioned that the Kingdom of Kurunegala was ruled by one of a great King in Srilankan history named Parakrama Bahu III who is believed to arrive the sacred Tooth relic of the Lord Buddha back to this kingdom during the time period of between 1287 to 1293 after the defeat of the Tamil invaders from the southern India. It is also said that since then the Kingdom of Kurunegala has been ruled by three other Kings in Srilanka. The three great Kings include King Buvanekabahu II, King Parakramabahu IV, and King Buwaneka Bahu III known to rule the country from the Kingdom of Kurunegala. The King Buwaneka Bahu III was the son of the King Panditha Parakrama Bahu II and is written as the last King who ruled this sacred island from Kurunegala Kingdom. With the ancient chronicles mentioned in the Srilankan history the King Parakramabahu IV has done lot of contribution towards developing the Buddhism in this marvelous island Srilanka. He had been responsible for number of temples, monasteries and sacred sites built within the Kingdom of Kurunegala. The main contributions towards the Kurunegala Kingdom includes, Vijayaba Pirivena, Weedagama Viharaya or the temple, Thotagamuwa Viharaya or the temple are just a few to mention of. The Samadhi Buddha statue located in the Kingdom of Kurunegala is one of a world famous granite statue considered to be one of the world tallest Buddha statue adding more value to this sacred Buddhists region.
With the belief of thousands of peoples and our ancestors it is believed that the name Kurunegala has been formed with the focus on a giant rock located in Kurunegala city. Among several rocks been formed in this region, hence comes a giant noticeable rock named as Elephant rock which translated into the word “Kurune” means an elephant or the tusker while the word “Gala” means the rock from Sinhala language. However it is also believed that the old name used to identify this region was “Hasthishaila – pura” which also translates into the same meaning of the word elephant rock. The Kingdom of Kurunegala is highly fulfilled with abundance of cocoanut and various tropical plantations making it one of a famous trade point in this site. Covered with a series of rock outcrops providing it with an additional marvelous picture perfect view all over the area. Being one of a famous central city in Srilanka the Kurunegala has been one of a major city hub in the present day with the access to number of modern facilities making it one of a general base for exploring valuable ancient ruins and landmarks.
