Marvelous sacred royal palace proudly enshrining the tooth relic of Lord Buddha

The temple of tooth or the great Sri Dalada Maligawa is believed to be one of a most sacred temple, built within the royal palace complex which houses the most sacred relics known to be the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha.  It is also considered as one of a most sacred Buddhist shrine in the world which is crowded up with thousands of pilgrims making precious offerings each and every day. Sri Dalada Maligawa or the temple of tooth is located in Kandy also considered as a center of the Buddhist faith from all around the world. It is also named as a heritage site by UNESCO due to the uncountable cultural value it holds.

Almost alike most of the historical places the Temple of Tooth also runs up around a great history itself.  According to the ancient chronicles and legends the sacred tooth relic was taken after the Lord Buddha’s pyre and brought to Srilanka, hidden in the hair of a princess named “Hemamali” known to be the daughter of  great Indian emperor. The great chronicles also mention that before the King Wimaladarmasuriya selected Kandy as the capital of this Island Srilanka, the Tooth of relic has been hidden in the area called “Delgamuwa” in “Sabaragamuwa” province for its best protection. Once when the King Wimaladarmasuriya built a two storey royal complex, the Tooth of relic was brought to Kandy and placed to be honored in the stunning seventeenth century. It is also believed to be that the last king of Srilanka the Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe built an octagen known as ” Paththiripuwa ” from sinhala in the royal temple complex which is used to address the fellow companion of the city. In the present day it has become a part of the temple and being the home for hundreds of ancient textures written in Ola leaves. The great Sri Dalada Maligawa is enriched and carved with thousands of adorable gold, wood and ivory adding more value to the royal temple building. Bounded with a long low bound white color wall and surrounded by the massive Kandy lake gives it a breath taking view for thousands of visitors from all around the world.  The “Maha Vahalkada” divided up into two walls on the side is the entrance for the Shrine housing the great Relic of the Lord Buddha.  One of a most special feature of these walls are that each wall consist of several holes which provides the facility of lighting up the lanterns at night. After passing the “Vahalkada” comes  the “Makara Thorana” a massive architectural design built patching up the cultural and historical beliefs.  Then once when passing a tunnel named ” Ambarwa” comes the temple complex, there you find the area in front of the door known to be ” The Hewisi Mandapaya” or the drummers court yard where the daily rituals are carried out on the sacred Relic. Once passing through the courtyard then come a chamber named “Wada Hithina Maligawa” in which the door is covered up with numerous number of gold, silver and ivory. It is the sacred chamber which houses the Relic of the Lord Buddha. The Tooth of Relic can be found encased in a casket of gold studded with thousands of gems and jewelries. In the other hand one of the most enchanting object that can be witness in this chamber is a lotus flower made of solid gold and studded with gems, hanging from the ceiling above the relic.

After witnessing the true spirituality and the beauty of this sacred place, then comes to the national museum located on the right side of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, making it the house for hundreds of royal and noble relics from ancient rulers who used to rule Srilanka. It has been one of the best places for gathering a great knowledge about Srilanka’s history and ancient legends.

The  “Esala Perahara” is one of a most common cultural and ritual possession festival held each year by  the Sri Dalada Maligawa. It is held when the Tooth Relic is taken out of the temple each year. On the other hand it also known to be the largest Buddhist festival from all around the world. Consisting hundreds of various dances, rituals and the royal elephant carrying out the Sacred casket of relic plays a major role in the festival. With a vast throng of devotees and onlookers from all around the world makes it one of a most magnificent event throughout the year.
